A real hit for the environment! The Blue Angel has already visited festivals in Berlin, Neustrelitz, Leipzig and Stuttgart this summer. Festivalgoers were invited to test their skills in a ring throwing game and also test their knowledge by answering some questions in an environmental quiz.
Pedalling along for sustainable festivals
The tour began at the immergut festival. This popular independent music event in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania and the Environmental Festival (Umweltfestival) in Berlin on the same weekend were chosen for a good reason. Festivals and camping holidays have also become the subject of much debate when it comes to sustainability and resource consumption over the last few years. It was for this reason that the German Environment Agency (UBA) and RAL decided to visit some festivals in person between the end of May and the beginning of July to provide visitors with:
-
background information on the Basic Award Criteria,
-
tips on how to plan your summer camping holiday in the most resource-conserving way possible,
-
the opportunity to win a practical fabric bag filled with a selection of products certified with the Blue Angel.
Ministerial visit to the 30th anniversary of the Environmental Festival
At the 30th edition of the Environmental Festival (Umweltfestival) in Berlin this year, a festival tent with papermaking activities for children, a claw crane game and a photo wall with “angel’s wings” was not only a popular port of call for numerous visitors to the festival site on “17th of June Street” at the beginning of June. Carsten Schneider, the new Federal Minister for the Environment, Climate Action, Nature Conservation and Nuclear Safety also paid a visit to the ecolabel of the German federal government while touring the festival grounds.
Stronger together – the Blue Angel and EU Ecolabel at the Kessel Festival
The next stop on the tour was the Ecofest (Ökofete) in Leipzig, which was once again a popular destination for visitors as in previous years. After spending some time on flat terrain at the festival grounds in Clara Zetkin Park, the festival bike then had to travel up and down some steep slopes as it made the long journey right across Germany to the Kessel Festival in Stuttgart, the State Capital of Baden-Württemberg. This two-day event owes its name primarily to Stuttgart’s geographical location in a valley basin shaped like a cauldron or “kessel” in German. Some renowned pop acts generated a lively party atmosphere as they turned the festival grounds on the banks of the Neckar river into a real cauldron. Numerous festival partners and sustainability initiatives could also be found on the Übermorgen (Day after Tomorrow) Market – which allowed visitors to take a quiet break from events on the stage.
The Blue Angel attended this year’s festival with its tandem partner the EU Ecolabel. This ecolabel from the EU Commission has been awarded to products and services since 1992 and recently started certifying campsites for the first time. The two cooperation partners were on hand to provide visitors to the festival grounds on Cannstatter Wasen in Stuttgart with comprehensive advice on how to make their camping adventure as environmentally friendly as possible by selecting suitable products from both product worlds.
Constantly on the move for environmentally friendly consumption.
