Cleaning product myth: the more the merrier

Whether it’s a deep clean of the refrigerator, cleaning tiles in the bathroom or simply washing the dishes – an extensive spring clean involves a large number of cleaning products. However, many of them are not only harmful to wastewater and aquatic organisms but can also contain allergenic fragrances or preservatives that pose a risk to our health. Environmentally-friendly cleaning products avoid substances that are harmful to the environment and health, promote the sustainable cultivation of renewable raw materials and reduce packaging waste – while still offering verifiably effective cleaning.

Janine Braumann from the German Environment Agency (UBA), the ecolabel’s office, explains: “When it comes to hygiene, many people often believe ‘more is more’ and use too many different strong cleaners. However, a small number of products is all it takes to clean a home thoroughly. Those who opt for cleaning products with the Blue Angel can rest assured that they not only have the desired effect but also have less impact on our health and the environment.”

Be careful when choosing cleaning products: the Blue Angel helps

According to the German Cosmetic, Toiletry, Perfumery and Detergent Association (IKW), 1.5 million tonnes of cleaning products and detergents are sold in Germany each year. To reduce their use, it is worth first checking where cleaning products are actually needed. Dusting or wiping surfaces does not require any chemicals at all and at most requires the use of water. You should completely avoid aggressive cleaning products containing hydrochloric acid or strong alkalis. These are labelled as corrosive. Disinfectants should also be avoided where possible. The Blue Angel provides guidance when it comes to choosing cleaning products that are gentle on the environment and health. From washing-up liquid to toilet cleaners, environmentally friendly alternatives can be identified by the ecolabel.

Safe cleaning: how to spring clean in an environmentally-friendly way

  • The right amount: When using cleaning products, the rule of thumb is: as much as necessary and as little as possible.
  • The cleaning essentials: The basic equipment should include a bathroom cleaner or a descaler to remove limescale in the bathroom, an all-purpose cleaner for the kitchen and washing-up liquid to wash the windows.
  • Look out for ecolabels: Ecolabels such as the Blue Angel that are printed on the packaging of all-purpose cleaning products highlight the environmental benefits of cleaning products and detergents at first glance without needing to study and assess long lists of ingredients.
  • It’s worth being quick: Ideally wipe fresh dirt away immediately with water before it dries. However, if it is more stubborn, it is better to wipe it one more time instead of immediately reaching for a cleaning product.

As a general rule, if too much of a product is used, its environmentally friendly effect is lost – no matter whether or not it has an ecolabel.
