Environmentally Friendly Building Products

As a customer at a furniture and carpet store it is up to the consumer to decide whether or not pollutants will move within one’s own four walls together with the new furniture. As a do-it-yourselfer it is you who decides on the volume of released pollutants. Sometimes, however, the deliberate decision for healthy and environmentally friendly products may be difficult: Information about pollutant contents are often contradictory, hardly accessible to consumers and often difficult to understand.

Also, hints like „bio-“, „nature-“ or „eco-“ do not provide reliable orientation information in the search for environmentally sound products because most advertising means do not mention the actual environmental benefits.

But it is possible to have a healthy and environmentally friendly living environment: The Blue Angel serves as an orientation aid in the search for low-pollutant products. The eco-label can be found on many essential home furnishing and interior work products: from wall paints and floor coverings to living room cabinets and mattresses.

Particularly low pollutant contents or the use of recycled materials during manufacture make Blue Angel-labelled wall papers, paints, varnishes and parquet floorings healthy and eco-friendly housemates. They do not only provide an environmental and heath advantage: Blue Angel-ecolabelled products also distinguish themselves by high quality and a long service life. Asking for eco-labelled products is an obvious alternative for the consumer to take an active role in making one’s home as pollutant-free as possible.

In building, like in hardly any other sector, the sustainability idea is also an economic factor: During the period of use the environmental assessment of a house is significantly determined by its heating system. Hence, decisive factors in eco-friendly building are high energy efficiency and low pollutant emissions of heating and hot water generation systems.

There has been fundamental change in both fields in recent years. However, caution is advised as not all heating systems are eco-friendly. To be on the safe side purchasing consumers are advised to look for the Blue Angel. Lots of particularly efficient and low-emission heating systems carry the Blue Angel eco-label.

In addition to efficient technologies, such as energy-saving gas-fired calorific-value heating devices and small-scale cogeneration units for simultaneous generation of power and heat, the Blue Angel is also awarded to regenerative heating systems: whether climate-friendly solar panels, low-emission wood-pellet stoves that fall distinctly below the legal particulate matter limits, or resource-conserving heating pumps – thanks to the Blue Angel it is possible to have an all-round environmentally friendly heat generation.

In addition to this, the Blue Angel distinguishes a series of high-quality recycled building products – such as insulating materials made from waste paper or primarily made from waste glass – for environmentally friendly thermal insulation. And the Blue Angel will continue to support the federal government’s environmental policy for clean air and climate protection by ecolabelling heating technologies that are particularly environmentally friendly.
