The Blue Angel – What’s behind it?

Growing Information Needs of Consumers

Pesticides in fruits and vegetables, spoiled meat in the chiller cabinet, chemicals in plastics, carpets or furniture: Many consumers are increasingly worried by media reports.

What can I buy without hesitation? Many consumers want more information about unwanted substances and chemicals in products. Not even every fifth German feels very well or well informed about the health and environment compatibility of products. Hence, there are large segments of the population who wish to be better informed.

A label that says more than a thousand words
The purpose of Environmental Label is clearly defined: The Blue Angel promotes the concerns of both environmental protection and consumer protection. Therefore, it is awarded to products and services which - from a holistic point of view - are of considerable benefit to the environment and, at the same time, meet high standards of serviceability and health and occupational protection. Economical use of raw materials during production and use, a long service life and a sustainable disposal – all these are factors of great importance. Consumers find the Blue Angel eco-label on the product itself while Blue Angel ecolabelled services make it part of their service offers.

The Blue Angel logo consists of the following three elements:
  1. The environmental symbol of the United Nations in the form of a blue ring with a laurel wreath and a blue figure with outstretched arms in the middle.
  2. The surrounding text specifying the main environmental properties of the product carrying the label, e.g. because energy-saving or low-noise.
  3. Indication of the product’s central protection goal, e.g. "it saves resources". The product groups are currently classified into four different protection goals.
