The revised Basic Criteria will be presented to the Environmental Label Jury for final decision at its June 2012 meeting. Following the subsequent publication of the criteria on the RAL web portal http://www.blauer-engel.de/en/company/survey_basic_award_criteria.php those interested can apply for use of the Blue Angel eco-label for their products under these new Basic Criteria.
The revised 2012 edition of the Basic Criteria will replace the existing version with effect from January 1st, 2013. Therewith, all office equipment with printing function that will be newly marketed with the Blue Angel eco-label from January 2013 must comply with the criteria of the revised 2012 edition.
The current Contracts on the Use of the Environmental Label based on the March 2011 edition of RAL-UZ 122 will be terminated by RAL gGmbH with due notice effective as of December 31, 2012. During a transitional phase, Blue Angel eco-labelled products which are already in the sales channel may continue to be sold after January 1st, 2013.
A list of Blue Angel certified office equipment with printing function can be found on the Blue Angel website at http://www.blauer-engel.de/en/products_brands/search_products/produkttyp.php?id=332 with an indication of the date of the respective edition of the Basic Criteria.
There are currently about 1000 pieces of Blue Angel eco-labelled office equipment with printing function supplied by 23 companies. The Blue Angel eco-label is awarded to only the best products and services of a product group from the ecological point of view. Independence and credibility are guaranteed by the Environmental Label Jury, Federal Ministry for the Environment, Federal Environmental Agency and RAL gGmbH. Members of the Environmental Label Jury are BDI (Federation of German Industry), BUND (Friends of the Earth Germany), DGB (Confederation of German Trade Unions), HDE (Central Association of German Retail Trade), NABU (Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union), vzbv (Federation of German Consumer Organisations), ZDH (German Confederation of Skilled Crafts), Stiftung Warentest (Foundation for comparative product testing), media, churches, science, Deutscher Städtetag (German Association of Cities) and the German Laender.

Blue Angel for Office Equipment with Printing Function – Revision of the Basic Criteria for Award of the Eco-Label
14/02/12. The experts had an in-depth discussion on the criteria and requirements to promote the development of the Blue Angel, as for example:- Requirements for the emissions of volatile organic compounds (TVOC, benzene and styrene) for all office equipment with printing function as well as
- Limitation of ozone and gravimetrically measurable dust emissions as well as requirements for particulate emissions (number-based measurements) in electrophotographic (laser) printing systems;
- Limitation of noise emissions and their determination on the basis of ISO 7779:2010 as well as the evaluation of the testing method;
- Energy requirements as well as requirements for recyclable design and material requirements are expected to be finally dealt with at a second expert hearing scheduled for 17/18 April 2012.
